Privacy policy
Your videos never reach us.
This page explains, in plain English, what OpaCaptions collects on this website and in the app. Last updated: 29 October 2026.
The short version
- Your videos, audio, transcripts and file names never leave your computer. Captioning happens entirely on your own PC.
- If you join the waitlist or create an account, we keep your email address (and the few details listed below) so we can send your download, licence keys and launch news.
- We don't sell or share your data, and this website uses no advertising or analytics trackers.
The OpaCaptions app
Speech recognition (OpenAI's open-source Whisper model) and video rendering run locally on your computer. Your footage is never uploaded to us or to any AI service, and it is never used to train AI.
The app itself uses the internet for three things only:
- Downloading the speech model the first time you use it. The model files come from Hugging Face, a model-hosting service; like any download, that request reveals your IP address to them.
- Activating your licence, and checking it at most once a day while you're online. This sends your licence key (or the signed licence it was exchanged for), an anonymous device ID and the app version, so we can check the licence and enforce the number of PCs on your plan.
- Checking for updates, at most once a day while you're online. This sends only the app's version number; the answer says whether a newer version is out. Nothing downloads unless you choose to update.
Sharing to social media (Pro and Studio) doesn't change this. When you choose a platform, the app opens that platform's upload page in your browser and shows the video in File Explorer; you upload it yourself, straight to TikTok, YouTube or Instagram, under their terms. The app sends nothing to them or to us.
This website
Waitlist. When you join early access we store your email address, what you make (for example "podcasts"), the plan you're interested in and the time you joined. To stop spam we also store a one-way, salted hash of your IP address, not the address itself. We use this only to email you about the OpaCaptions launch and your early-bird price.
Accounts. If you create an account we store your email address, your name if you give one, when you confirmed your email and last signed in, and a hashed password only if you choose to set one (you can always sign in with an emailed link instead). We also keep your licence keys and, for each PC you activate, the device name you see in your account, its app version and an anonymous device ID. New accounts are added to the launch list. Sign-in links and session tokens are stored only as one-way hashes, and to stop abuse we store salted hashes of IP addresses, never the addresses themselves. You can delete your account yourself under Settings.
Cookies. The public pages set no cookies. Signing in to your account sets one essential cookie that keeps you signed in (for up to 30 days, or until you sign out); the sign-in pages also set a short-lived security cookie that protects the forms. There are no tracking or advertising cookies.
Emails. Sign-in links, licence keys and launch news come from noreply@opacaptions.com and are sent through our own web host's mail server, not a third-party email service.
No third parties. Fonts, videos and images are served from our own server. The site has no ads, analytics, social-media trackers or embedded third-party scripts.
Hosting. The website, waitlist and accounts are hosted by our web host, Namecheap, which processes data on our behalf to run the servers and send our emails.
How long we keep it
We keep your waitlist details until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them, and no longer than needed once OpaCaptions has launched. Account details stay until you delete your account; licence records for purchases may be kept as long as the law requires for tax and accounting.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete your data, or withdraw your consent, at any time. This applies wherever you live, including under the EU/UK GDPR and India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act. Email support@opacaptions.com and we'll respond promptly.
Changes
If we change this policy we'll update this page and the date above. If a change affects how we use your email, we'll tell you first.
